Pressemitteilungen von Andrej Hunko

Three years on: the Federal Government of Germany recognises the role played by the Ramstein base in the US drone war

“The Federal Foreign Office has admitted for the first time that US bases in Germany are involved in the deadly drone war. For three years, Members of the Bundestag were kept in the dark and the public deceived. The Federal Government is thus involved in extrajudicial killings in breach of international law. In my view, this meets the definition of approving a crime and obstruction of justice”, stated Member of the Bundestag Andrej Hunko during yesterday’s Question Time session at the Bundestag.

Three years after the submission of a list of questions to the Federal Government, the US Embassy has confirmed Ramstein’s status as a hub in the US drone war. This not only applies to the relay station there (which has now been extended), but also to other capabilities for the planning, monitoring and assessment of air operations. Investigative media first reported on the Ramstein and Stuttgart facilities in autumn 2013. Former drone pilot Brandon Bryant also stated in his testimony to the Committee of Inquiry on the NSA Affair that these facilities were used for drone operations.

Andrej Hunko continued: “Together with Niema Movassat and Hans-Christian Ströbele, we have made numerous enquiries in connection with the revelations made in this context. The Federal Government always limited itself to simply quoting Barack Obama’s assurance that no drones were launched or controlled from Ramstein. This was a deliberate attempt to mislead, since neither the media nor we had made such a claim.

The AFRICOM Command in Ramstein and Stuttgart is responsible for US air strikes using drones in countries like Somalia and Yemen. According to media reports, these drones have been used for extrajudicial killings. By approving the illegal activities in Rhineland-Palatinate, the Federal Government is violating not only its own constitution, which enshrines the right to life, but also international law and universal human rights.

In response to an initiative from us, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has called for European governments to be obliged to declare the ways they tolerate or even support the US drone war on their territory. The Federal Government must now react to this and submit an official communication to the Council of Europe. This applies to Italy as well, since the US government also runs bases used for the drone war on Italian territory, in Sicily.”
